Biliary atresia is a congenital (by birth), due to the lack of development of the biliary channels. Bile is the secretion of the liver.. draining out along numerous small intrahepatic biliary channels joining together to form the common bile duct. This drains the bile in to the intestine (duodenum) to help digestion of fat. Biliary Atresia presents as jaundice after first few weeks of birth. Doctors confirm diagnosis by blood test, ultrasono abdomen and liver biopsy. Biliary atresia is more common in East Asia. Congenital B.A has genetic association, Less often it can be acquired by autoimmune or infection induced inflammation. Surgical treatment by Kasai procedure is not curative; only sustains life till a definitive treatment (Liver Transplant) is done.
